water mill on the Fluvia

Total reformation of a 16th century watermill in La Garrotxa, Girona.

Water mill on the river Fluvia

A project to completely reform a crumbling 500 year old water mill on the banks of the river Fluvia, Girona, into a modern characterful home.

OVERVIEW

First documented in the mid 16th century, the water mill was fed through a network of water channels and a large existing mill pond.

The new house retains the mill pond as part of the garden area. The interior is completely insulated with modern installations using biomass for all heating. The circulation is rationalised and the upper floor opened out into a large open living space. A tall south facing doorway has been opened onto a terrace overlooking the mill pond to the south, allowing winter sun to reflect up off the water surface into the living-kitchen space. The project maintains the building’s significant historical features such as the pond, bread oven, basement vaults and stone lintels.
